![]() ![]() “Why don’t you two just do it and get it over with” is perhaps an overused line coming from Vickie, but works in the way it was sudden and left Troy unprepared to spit out any smart-ass comments and instead left him with an honest subtle reaction. These two in a car singing along to Tempted by Squeeze. These are some of my favourites moments, frames and lines: The coolness The love story of “Laney” and Troy can be accused of being soapy for sure, but I find it to be the perfect 20-somethings movie romance – cause it is a movie – together with the rest of the story of how reality can bite in that age. ![]() He makes him human by putting his vulnerability out there for us to see when jealousy and self-loathing takes the best of him during these 90 minutes. I wonder if today this character wouldn’t be impossible, but it doesn’t matter, because this is 1994, smart slackers are cool and he is totally saved by Hawkes fine, fine acting. Troy Dyer is a total douche, there is no way around that. Yet, the more I watch and rewatch my eyes turn also towards Ethan Hawke. She is the epitome of beautiful cuteness and coolness mixed with that adorable clumsiness. Ryder’s valedictorian Lelaina Price is the center of attention of course and I can’t take my eyes off her. They are celebrating graduation, except for philosophy major Troy, who couldn’t bother to finish. The gang - Vickie (Janeane Garofalo), Troy (Ethan Hawke), Sammy (Steve Zahn) and Lelaina (Winona Ryder - is being filmed by filmmaker wannabe Lelaina’s ever present camera. It is a perfect testimonial to that era and it is as clever and charming as 25 years ago. The movie about four Generation X’s graduating from college and trying to find their way in life, in this case in Houston Texas, made me as happy today as it did then. ![]() Troy Dyer is a total douche, there is no way around that, but he is totally saved by Hawkes fine, fine acting I realise now that it was actually 25 years ago today – Febru– Reality Bites, written by Helen Childress and directed by Ben Stiller, premiered in the US after viewings at the Sundance Film festival previous month. 25 years ago this gem of a picture, the perfect testimonial to Generation X and the 1990’s premiered in the US and as it turns out, Reality Bites is as charming and clever to watch today,įor no specific reason I started watching one of my favourite 1990’s movies a few days ago and I ended up spending the weekend obsessing over it. ![]()
